The Bug Bitten! The name’s pretty much self-explanatory, but doesn’t quite justify the happenstance and serendipity of its existence. But then even our names don’t quite reflect the chances of us existing or our formative experiences – You can see where I’m going with this – Chance, Happenstance. Serendipity, Awareness and the truly human ability of Appreciation is what this tea is all about, with a story to go with it. Very Much like us.
Exploring the details would be like visiting the quintessential Darwinian playground. It involves the besieged tea plant and its natural defense mechanisms kicking in to yield a truly unique tea, all happening in the scenic highlands of Darjeeling during the summer.
Defined both by Nature’s Care and its Wrath, it’s a quotable example of how balance is restored.
Here’s how it goes down: As the temperature starts to rise, during the summer season of Darjeeling, there is an increase in a specific type of insect known as Tea Jassids which love to feed on the tea leaves, sucking out the moisture and causing tiny pin pricks in the leaves. This causes the leaves to shrivel, slowing down its growth. Now the plant’s defense mechanism kicks in releasing enzymes to repair the leaves. These enzymes add the uniqueness to taste of the tea. The tiny holes left by the Jassids cause a natural oxidation process to start which releases a certain smell that’s very-very appetizing to humans and this is where nature starts balancing the scales – the “smell” that’s so appetizing to humans also attracts Jassid predators, balancing the act.
The slower growth of the leaves causes the leaves to retain a lot of flavors while they mature.
This happenstance of Jassid attack, plant’s defense mechanism kicking in – slowing growth, results in the uniqueness of flavor and in no little measure the skillful human element comes into play, working with only a small window of opportunity to recognize, pluck and process this into Oolong tea giving us this naturally sweet tea with a Woody – Musky aroma and full of Fruity, Muscatel, Citrusy – slightly Spicy notes.
“Thus begins another hopeful summer. What now….??”
