SUMMER BUG BITTEN – 75 Gms

Hope will always be accompanied with impatience. It’s the only way to contain hope, without drowning in it, with impatience stretching out the container of your being to accommodate its swelling. There’s a jungle of feelings you harbor and indifferently it shelters both the savagery and the civility; of impatience and hope, indifference and concern, heartbreak and fulfilment, despair and expectation, grievance and gratitude. We fend hope against the threat of disappointment, nurture it and even when the hopeful arrives with deep fulfilment, our heart silently whispers “What now….”. That’s the unpaid labor of everyday humanity. What makes us navigate this jungle is the sustenance of relief and eventual joy, wherever and whenever we are able to find it. The wonderful part is ‘Relief is always new, never old, and equally soothing every time it’s bestowed’. We just wish we’d sit a little longer with our relief. Then again, maybe we do; maybe, it’s relief we brew and sit with.

There’s a lot we experienced in anticipation to its arrival and every year we are able to appreciate a little more of the complexity and relish a little more of the simplicity of these leaves. As much anticipation, expectation, fulfilment and appreciation we had, has now turned into relief, humility and joy as we relist this tea. (We were a little apprehensive, we must say, about how this first bounty of summer would yield). If you have read the description before, then you share our joy and amazement that nature has come through once again. Although a little late from last year, we really can’t complain, but only marvel at the number of things that could go wrong, but didn’t, in producing this tea! And here it is……

It is with relief, gratitude and joy that we relist the Bug Bitten and it’s reprise we wish unto you.

The AV2 cultivar dry leaves bear the same familiar notes of Honey and green grapes, with extremely fine plucking of prominent buds and large leaves. The tea itself brews thick, into a dulcified bright amber liquor with flavors of raisins and dried apricots. Even peach and a little mango make noticeable appearances along with woody and slightly spicy note. With no astringency it is a smooth and sweet summer tea.

If you are new to this summer tea, then we suggest to read on to know about where our hope, anticipation, impatience, apprehension and eventual joy comes form. It’s quite a story.

The Bug Bitten! The name’s pretty much self-explanatory, but doesn’t quite justify the happenstance and serendipity of its existence. But then even our names don’t quite reflect the chances of us existing or our formative experiences – You can see where I’m going with this – Chance, Happenstance. Serendipity, Awareness and the truly human ability of Appreciation is what this tea is all about, with a story to go with it. Very Much like us.

Exploring the details would be like visiting the quintessential Darwinian playground. It involves the besieged tea plant and its natural defense mechanisms kicking in to yield a truly unique tea, all happening in the scenic highlands of Darjeeling during the summer.

Defined both by Nature’s Care and its Wrath, it’s a quotable example of how balance is restored.

Here’s how it goes down: As the temperature starts to rise, during the summer season of Darjeeling, there is an increase in a specific type of insect known as Tea Jassids which love to feed on the tea leaves, sucking out the moisture and causing tiny pin pricks in the leaves. This causes the leaves to shrivel, slowing down its growth. Now the plant’s defense mechanism kicks in releasing enzymes to repair the leaves. These enzymes add the uniqueness to taste of the tea. The tiny holes left by the Jassids cause a natural oxidation process to start which releases a certain smell that’s very-very appetizing to humans and this is where nature starts balancing the scales – the “smell” that’s so appetizing to humans also attracts Jassid predators, balancing the act.

The slower growth of the leaves causes the leaves to retain a lot of flavors while they mature.

This happenstance of Jassid attack, plant’s defense mechanism kicking in – slowing growth, results in the uniqueness of flavor and in no little measure the skillful human element comes into play, working with only a small window of opportunity to recognize, pluck and process this into Oolong tea giving us this naturally sweet tea with a Woody – Musky aroma and full of Fruity, Muscatel, Citrusy – slightly Spicy notes.

“Thus begins another hopeful summer. What now….??”
